Conservation proposals for historical Özbek Bath, Urla

Abstract

Özbek Bath is one of the Ottoman baths in Urla that has survived until today that is considered to have been built in the 15th century or 16th century. The building is an indicator of the identity of the Özbek Village in the past together with the historical laundries, fountains and bridges. The bath is a cultural heritage that needs to be protected with its domed and vaulted superstructure, plan layout consisting of two private bathing cells opening to the warm space/hot space, water reservoir and woodshed, copper boiler embedded in the flooring of the water reservoir, sitting platforms and stone basins. The bath substantially maintains its original qualities with its construction technique and material use. The dressing space and toilet, wooden roof of the woodshed of the building, which has not been used since 1970, have totally collapsed. The upper parts of the walls of the east and west facades, and the walls of the woodshed, courtyard and chimney are partially collapsed. The bath has architectural, historical, environmental, traditional, documentary and originality values, however, its current structural problems require intervention. The purpose of this study is to document the architectural and structural qualities of the structure that are present today and to develop conservation recommendations taking the original qualities and problems into consideration. The method of the study includes literature research and documentation study based on field study. The study includes intervention decisions for the re-functioning and protection of the structure and for its repair conserving its original qualities. It is recommended that the structure should regain its use as a bath taking the views of the residents of the village on the bath and the regional, socio-cultural requirements into consideration. With this approach, decisions were developed for the reconstruction of the collapsed dressing space and toilet, repair of the partial missing and deformations in line with the original architectural qualities. The intervention decisions will contribute to the protection of the Özbek Bath as a cultural heritage.Özbek Hamamı, Urla’da 15.-16. yüzyıllarda inşa edildiği düşünülen ve günümüze kadar ulaşan Osmanlı Dönemi hamam yapılarından biridir. Yapı, Özbek Köyü’ndeki tarihi çamaşırhaneler, çeşmeler ve köprüler ile birlikte yerleşmenin geçmiş dönemlerdeki kimliğinin göstergesidir. Hamam, kubbeli ve tonozlu üst örtüsü, ılıklık/sıcaklık mekanına açılan iki halvet hücresi, su deposu ve odunluktan oluşan plan düzeni, su deposunun döşemesinde gömülü bakır kazanı, sekileri ve taş kurnaları ile korunması gerekli kültür varlığıdır. Planlama, yapım tekniği ve malzeme özellikleri ile hamam, büyük ölçüde özgün özelliklerini korumaktadır. 1970 yılından bu yana kullanılmayan yapının soyunmalık ve tuvalet mekanları, odunluk mekanının ahşap çatısı tümüyle yıkılmıştır. Batı ve doğu cephe duvarlarının üst kısımları, odunluk, avlu ve baca duvarları kısmi olarak yıkılmıştır. Hamam; mimari, tarihi, kültürel, çevresel, geleneksel, belge ve özgünlük değerlerine sahiptir ancak günümüzde sahip olduğu yapısal problemler müdahale gerektirmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, hamamın günümüze kadar gelen mimari ve yapısal özelliklerini belgelemek ve korunması gereken özgün nitelikleri ile problemlerini dikkate alarak koruma önerileri geliştirmektir. Çalışmanın yöntemi arazi incelemesine dayalı olarak belgeleme çalışması ve literatür araştırmasıdır. Çalışmada, yapının yeniden işlevlendirilmesine ve korunmasına yönelik müdahale kararları, özgün nitelikleri koruyarak yapının onarılması yönünde geliştirilmiştir. Köy sakinlerinin hamam ile ilgili düşünceleri ve bölgesel sosyokültürel ihtiyaçlar göz önünde bulundurularak yapıya hamam kullanımının yeniden kazandırılması önerilmiştir. Bu yaklaşımla yıkık soyunmalığın ve tuvaletin yeniden yapılması, kısmi kayıp ve bozulmaların özgün mimari özelliklere uygun olarak onarılması yönünde kararlar geliştirilmiştir. Geliştirilen müdahale kararları, Özbek Hamamı’nın bir kültür mirası olarak korunmasına katkı sağlayacaktır.
