Master Thesis Analysis of four urban squares in Izmir according to the leading urban design literature(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2018-12) Ceyhan Abacı, Fatma; Çil, Ela; Velibeyoğlu, KorayThe squares are the significant elements of the urban public spaces that provide the users different experience in the city, activate their city life and they are human oriented places for cities and societies. The squares are strong accumulation places where each day a different experience comes true so they transfer society‟s culture, social habits, way of life, memories from past to the future. Since urban squares have those significant roles for cities, researching the spatial, functional and social qualities of the squares are very important to understand and identify them. The aim of this study is to reveal the characteristics of urban squares according to leading literature studies. The study focuses on what are the criteria we need to analyze in order to determining the qualities of the squares. Accordingly, the main common ideas on urban squares in the literature have been categorized to evaluate the squares. The leading qualities of the squares comprise of the ten normative criteria based on sixteen important authors of related studies which are the main textbooks of the thesis. The content of the criteria consists mainly of the characteristics that the square must have physically, socially and functionally. In this study, Ali Paşa Square, Hatuniye Square, Cumhuriyet Square, and Gündoğdu Square are chosen in İzmir as case study area. The study cases are observed and analyzed according to ten evaluation criteria. The analyses results extract the characteristics of each square. All findings, results and normative criteria are together discussed as results. The results of this study may guide to reconsideration of urban squares within modern usages and designing more useful squares for further studies.Master Thesis Blue growth in Izmir Peninsula(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019-07) Coşkunışık, Ceren; Velibeyoğlu, KorayThe trend towards exploiting natural resources caused by urbanization and increasing population has recently started to attract significant attention. In particular, it is the 'Blue Growth' concept, a subject not previously considered in the field of planning, for which the European Union has started to develop holistic and sustainable policies. In traditional planning studies, the terrestrial and coastal areas are considered as a whole and the marine areas are excluded from the planning. The seas, however, cover a large part of the city and its habitats. In marine areas such as the terrestrial areas; The regions that need to be protected, the species that need to be protected, the regions that are formed according to the diversity of the areas of use, and the regions that need to be used by the sectoral diversity. In this study, people from different institutions and organizations involved with marine areas were interviewed by using qualitative data collection method. The study aims to raise awareness about marine areas, to give information about the European approach in dealing with marine areas and to show that the seas should be considered together with land and coastal planning in Turkey. Therefore, in this study, we investigated how the sea areas are used, which laws and regulations are applied to the seas, which sectors and which stakeholders are involved with the sea. Then, maritime areas were examined on the Izmir peninsula in the framework of marine tourism and aquaculture and fishing. As a result of this study, we hope to increase awareness about the marine areas to be included in the field of planning and we will suggest our ideas about the holistic planning approach. This study will provide guidance on the marine environment and legal regulations for future studies.Master Thesis Evaluating the impact of urban policies for disabled in Izmir(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019-07) Şahin, Kardelen Ekin; Velibeyoğlu, KorayIn the world, more than 1 billion people are experiencing disability every day, and the phenomenon of disability has been increasingly discussed each passing day. That the individual mutually interacts with the built environment and society, moreover, that physical and behavioral barriers from outside are concrete and abstract barriers that limit the individual's activities are important approaches that have been discussed for a long time. What is described here is that what creates the situation of 'being restricted' or 'disability' is the restrictive environment, society's negative and wrong attitudes. Although there are many regulations, studies and initiatives on disability and accessibility approaches in our country, it is seen that there are insufficient holistic studies, which are proceeded to remove physical and behavioral barriers and make investments in the social sphere. In this study, it was aimed to analyze the process of innovative policy making and implementation, which deals with the concept of disability both physically and socially, from a holistic perspective. In line with this aim, the 'Accessible Izmir Project' of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality was examined as a case that handles the disability phenomenon in the light of the socio-politic model and sees accessibility as a physical and social phenomenon. This project is an initiative that aims to ensure accessibility, to support initiatives in the social field, making studies to ensure the participation of the disabled in public and social life, and to create a more livable and inclusive city in doing so. In accordance with this purpose, within the scope of this project, studies are being made to get rid of both physical and attitudinal barriers. While adopting incentive approaches to provide accessibility, efforts are being made to break down perceptions and approaches, which are negative, incomplete and wrong, against people with disabilities. In this study, through the semi-structured interviews with the main actors of this project, the dimensions of this sample, disability, and approaches to accessibility are examined.Master Thesis Evaluating the impacts of geothermal energy plants on quality of life: Case of Alasehir (Manisa)(01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2021-12) Altındaş, Gamze; Velibeyoğlu, Koray; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyQuality of life has been handled with different approaches by many disciplines from past to present, and it has started to be used frequently in the international agenda in order to meet the needs of the increasing world population and to find solutions to problems such as climate change. Due to the multidimensional and complex nature of the concept, there is no consensus on the definition and measurement method. Quality of life definitions, and indicators varies in the context of scale, approach, and method. The study concentrates on the perceived quality of life of people close proximity to geothermal power plants in the case of Alaşehir. First, the indicators used in neighbourhood, rural and environmental quality of life studies were examined and grouped under the parameters of built environment, accessibility, vulnerability, degradation, health, contamination, and resilience. Then, the historical background, usage, geothermal systems, environmental impacts and social acceptance of geothermal energy and geothermal energy studies in Turkey were evaluated. As a result of this evaluation, the participation parameter was added to the research. In line with socio-spatial analysis, the areas under the influence of geothermal power plants were determined and semi-structured interviews were conducted with the parameters. As a result of the analyses and interviews, it has been determined that the impact of geothermal energy on the quality of life in Alaşehir district is perceived through agricultural production. Contamination, vulnerability, and participation parameters come to the fore, and show that geothermal power plants negatively affect the perceived quality of life.Doctoral Thesis Evaluation of creative industry clusters through the ecosystem approach: Investigation of weedding wear sector in Izmir(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2015-07) Mengi, Onur; Velibeyoğlu, KorayThe emergence of new economy has brought the creative industries onto the urban research agenda. Despite the extensive literature on the subject, there is need of a more in-depth approach to investigation the unique formations of creative industry clusters. The aim of this dissertation is to explore the particular organizational and spatial structures of creative industry clusters from the ecosystem perspective. This present study recognizes the fashion industry as a creative industry and the wedding wear sector as its subset. Then, it investigates how the cluster of wedding wear sector operates as an ecosystem in terms of the diversity, interaction, competition and evolution in the case of Mimar Kemalettin Fashion District. The methodology consists of the literature review, preliminary field studies, development of the DICE model which explores the diversity, interaction, competition and evolution of ecosystems in a particular space, pilot study for testing the model, data collection via site visits, DICE survey and additional interviews on site, data processing through descriptive analyses and regression analyses, and conclusions. The findings reveal that the existing cluster is young and emerging. This ecosystem currently self-operates with shortage of diversity in a concentrated spatial structure. The role of geographical proximity and the existing local buzz are substantial on excessive internal interactions. The existing competitive atmosphere is portrayed as a win-lose situation and there is a considerable disinterest towards to collaborations. For evolution, the ecosystem mutually co-evolve with mutation occurred inside the firms. Also, the crossover is found primarily a localized phenomenon.Master Thesis Exploring temporaray usage opportunities of urban public spaces for event organizations(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2010) Şenyol, Özlem; Velibeyoğlu, KorayThe adjustment of urban spaces to the necessitated usages which is resulted from the rapidly altering daily practices is a difficult process. Since the traces of that alteration are widely seen in the public spaces, the design of those spaces is need to be taken into account form a large perspective. In this regard, temporary usage of public space is an essential condition used for the re-organization and re-design of public open spaces in today.s urban areas. That allows us to reconsider public spaces in relation with time and space. This study intends to evaluate event organizations in open public spaces temporarily for different kinds of events (i.e. arts and culture, sports, science and education, recreation) and scrutinizes the temporary usage opportunities of open public spaces for events with a new method .Eventcheck'. This method corresponds with other known examples of urban design studies that use checklist approach such as .Placecheck and Chapacitycheck.. In addition, this method has been developed as an urban design guide that enables to evaluate the skills and needs for various actors (such as urban designers, artists and organizers) who are the parts of providing event organizations in open public spaces. In order to obtain actor.s preferences and needs about event organizations, a comprehensive pre-determined list of semi-structured questionnaires are prepared. İstanbul and İzmir are selected for place of interviews due to their distinctive cultural policies. Consequently, this research puts forward eventcheck method for improving temporary usage into open public spaces for event organizations.Master Thesis Fab Labs as innovative production spaces in the city: Comparative analysis of Izmir and Dortmund(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019-07) Bilgöl O, Hazal; Velibeyoğlu, KorayIn this study, a comparative analysis of three fab labs has been investigated regarding innovative and creative spaces in cities. Therefore, the fab lab models in Germany and Turkey have been examined. Fab Lab model has been emerged in the cities related to maker spaces and the Maker Movement to enhance the maker culture in the community. Under the guidance of literature reviews, the Maker Movement, Maker cities, Fab Lab model relations has been mentioned. In the scope of the study, three fab labs İzmir Fabrika Lab, Dortmund Dezentrale Fab Lab and HRW Bottrop Fab Lab was examined under the determined subtitles. Additionally, semi-structured interviews were conducted with fab lab managers and workers. Fab lab objectives shape related to establishment process, initiator and organisation model. Regarding the various objectives of fab labs, user profiles, impacts and network with other foundations differentiate. To this extent, it is crucial to answering how fab labs can spread in cities considering their relationship between maker community and public spaces in the urban design context. By developing citizen participation, considering the potentiality of transforming fab labs to third places and specialisation possibilities of fab labs can response urban and community issues or needs. Therefore, when the fab lab model considered as revitalisation and transformation strategy, it is possible to answer environmental problems and demands with innovative and creative methods.Doctoral Thesis Institutional use of information technologies in city planning agencies: implications from Turkish metropolitan municipalities(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2004) Velibeyoğlu, Koray; Süel, AkınThis study argues the pivotal relationship between the computing technology and its organizational context. It focuses on nature of implementation in organizational settings that are becoming increasingly important. A further motivation point for this study is to reveal the different discourses (managerial/political/emotional etc.) in the cycle of implementation. The assumption behind this interest is that IT and other technologies are not value-neutral and these tools have the possibility of shaping the goals and agenda of the planning profession. As a part of methodology of the thesis, a comprehensive literature survey was completed around the theoretical issues that constitutes the framework of IT/IS adoption in organizations with a particular reference to urban planning and management. The statements and research questions were tested in the planning departments of selected metropolitan municipalities (Ankara, Izmir, and Bursa) that are experiencing information technologies and systems in various implementation stages. The research strategy was based on a variety of qualitative approaches, including two different types of closed questionnaire-based surveys and semi-structured/unstructured interviews. To measure the success/failure degree of the planning technologies used in the case study organizations in the 'user' dimension of the study, DeLone and McLean.s (1992) IS Success Model and Heeks'(1999) ITPOSMO model were used.Case study research revealed the current stands of ICT implementation in urban planning departments of local governments. It was also evaluated planning practitioner.s commitment and dependence towards computerized planning tools in working practice. In a more exploratory context, a progressive research agenda for ICT implementation in public planning agencies was developed based on the implications of empirical research and literature-based analysis.Master Thesis Interrogating time, space and place within technological approach(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2011) Çevikayak, Murat; Velibeyoğlu, KorayTechnology was and is the most powerful tool, humankind used to develop civilizations and improve the quality of their environment and life. Beside this fact, humankind comprehends and creates solutions in their physical surroundings like buildings, vehicles and clothes. This process of creation relies upon certain factors as necessities, search of variation and evolution. As technology evolved when covering necessities and demands, the relationship between physical environment and humankind has changed respectively like bridges or space shuttles. Since information age began with emerging computer technology, this change in relationship has peaked to a different level where physical environment is slightly replaced with virtual interactions through computers and other various devices. Here, in cities where technology has distinctive marks on, this effect can be tracked through citizens " everyday life and from the use of urban spaces. The alternating interaction routine of people from physical environment to space-free virtual space has resulted with lacks in using urban space that are the communication spaces of the city. The aim of this study is to paraphrase the evolution of this transformation from literature and designate potential trails to approach this problem by exploring global practices.Master Thesis An investigation of public spaces in Izmir from a place management perspective(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2017-12) İnanç, Eray Mustafa; Velibeyoğlu, KorayIn this study, the development of place management, its constituent elements and the management of various public places in the case of İzmir have been investigated. Place management incorporates the effects of place making and place governance. By conducting literature reviews, place management was divided into the sub-topics of place development, place quality and place branding. In the scope of study, three international projects were examined regarding the aforementioned sub-topics, including the Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz, New York High Line and Bryant Park. Additionally, in local context, semi-structured interview were conducted with the place managers of three sites in Izmir, all having different management schemes (Balçova Telpher, The Elevator Tower in Karataş and Sasalı Natural Life Park). Suitable infrastructure, a growth-supporting legal climate and the usage of technology are three essential factors for the development of an area. However, place development is also linked directly to the development of high quality places. Besides social and environmental factors, local administrations have to give an opportunity to such development. With good design and development of an area inevitably comes the branding of such a place. To this extent, it is critical to answer the question of how a public place can be successfully managed starting from the design phase. Not only initial costs, but also running costs need to be taken into consideration during this design phase, during implementation and monitoring. Therefore, by applying good place management, it is possible to ensure both internal continuity and the sustainability of its successes.Master Thesis Low carbon neighborhood: Walking and cycling priority urban design(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2018-06) Gündel, Hande; Velibeyoğlu, KorayFollowing The Industrial Revolution, along with newly developing job opportunities, a rapid migration from rural to urban has begun. With the increasing flow of migration, the urban enlarged. With the increase of the distance in access, wide motorways and railways started to be built up on these areas. Along with major freeways, throughout 20th Century, the natural environment began to be destroyed and fragmented, resulting in urban sprawl and environmental pollution. Traces of the reclaim of the streets from car dominance were examined and the steps leading to a low carbon living were investigated. As a result, five principles were developed upon this living mode. These principles were scrutinized at the neighborhood scale. Having strong social bond in itself, the neighborhood scale is appropriate for implementing these principles. In the study, single case studies suitable for various low carbon living concepts were examined. According to the method, the theoretical structure of the study was evaluated, then applied projects were examined, and thus an awareness questionnaire on "low carbon living" was applied with cyclists representing low carbon transportation. This study of "low carbon living awareness" is the first academic study in Turkish case. According to the survey results, cyclists’ awareness of low carbon living is promising. In particular, awareness of low carbon transportation is high. İzmir has potential in terms of low carbon living. In general, there is a certain awareness degree and walking and cycling priority urban design. All of this forms the basis for the formation of low carbon neighborhoods.Master Thesis Nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation and sustainable urban drainage in tropical coastal cities: A case for Mombasa city(01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2021-07) Suleiman Haji, Haji Kidui; Velibeyoğlu, Koray; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyClimate change is a reality, and its impact is being experienced all over the globe. The effects range from heat waves, rising sea levels, coastal erosion, flooding, drought, and reduction of bio-diversity among others. Urban areas are at greater risk since they accommodate the majority of the global human population exceeding 55% and are expected to be 68% by 2050. The most affected urban areas are the tropical coastal cities since most of them fall within low and middle-income countries with low levels of economic development and technological capabilities hence a low capacity to adapt. This study focuses on exploring Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) as an affordable and ecologically sustainable approach to enhance climate change adaptability in tropical coastal cities. A case study of Mombasa is considered, a typical tropical coastal city located in Kenya. Primary data sources including pictures and key informant interviews via snowball sampling were employed to gather ground information. Secondary sources consisted of institutional data review, strategic documents, policies, and scientific journals on NBS and Climate Change adaptation in tropical environments. The study findings depicted the climate change associated challenges in Mombasa include urban flooding, rising sea levels, coastal erosion, increasing temperatures. Rapid urbanization related challenges include inadequate infrastructure and services, poor liquid and solid waste management and inadequate housing. The study proposes NBS measures such as coastal vegetation restoration, implementing green infrastructure in the urban area, and creeks restoration could offer multi-dimensional benefits that can be replicated in other tropical coastal cities to enhance sustainability and climate resilience.Master Thesis Organisation of design cooperatives as a part of co-production movements(01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2021-07) Kerimi, Ayşıl Sara; Velibeyoğlu, Koray; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis study investigates new ways of working models for designers by examining a design cooperative while contributing to the literature of new generation cooperatives in Turkey. In this study a case examination of a design cooperative has done regarding the phenomenon of new generation cooperatives and various expanded roles of designers. The case of design cooperative is from İzmir. New generation cooperatives emerged due to changes in market forces and make cooperatives to revive. On the other hand, design works scope has facing changes and tries to solve more complex problems day by day. With the help of the literature, changes in economic patterns, new generation cooperative, expanded roles of designer and penta-helix framework for multiple design initiatives is mentioned. Platformİzmim Service and Solidarity Cooperative is form İzmir is examined through determined points. Case of cooperative defines itself as design cooperative regarding their membership structure and the profile of members. Examination done via semi-structured interviews with volunteered members regarding various layers. In order to lay contextual relation several meetings done for understanding of İzmir context. Design cooperatives give the impression of a new practice that can enable all disciplines that have an impact on the design of the environment we live in, and thus the formation of a wide range of ideas and designs within the mediating practice which involves negotiation between various penta-helix actors. Penta helix is one of the concepts of the cross-sector collaboration of stakeholders (community, government, business, academics, and social entrepreneur). Yet it observed that several key factors still needs to be discussed to place design cooperative in eligible category.Master Thesis Place attachment in the urban design guides: Case of Buca(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2018) Bayram, Arzu; Velibeyoğlu, KorayThis study investigates physical ties of inhabitants, to Dumlupınar neighbourhood and its surroundings where situated in the district of Buca and has a conservation plan, in the context of urban design guides. While cities has faced with losing their identities in the present times, conservation plans are assets in this sense but only not sufficient enough by themselves. Technical specifications, which constitute a framework for the implementation of conservation plans, are used as a standardized template, without any specific definitions. This situation ignores the identity of each place and the historical processes it undergoes and prevents its ability to carry its values to the future. Urban design guides are the tools that makes more explicit definitions on plans by taking into account the specific development processes of each place. In this sense, urban design guides must be considered as a whole with development plans. This makes sure of cities that have different identities can be more liveable and transferable to the future. As a result, the content of the meaning of places where people grow feelings to, can be evaluated in terms of urban design guides in order to make places liveable.Doctoral Thesis Reading types of urban form as a tool for conservation development plans(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2021-07) Güçer Payamcı, Evrim; Velibeyoğlu, Koray; Izmir Institute of TechnologyUrbanization processes and incremental approaches ignore, even destroy, the continuity of the built environment that is defined with the historical traces. Planning studies, which aim to provide continuity or create the future with references of the past, require a comprehensive and pro-determinist urban analysis. This study aims to analyze existing city and its communication with former layers to reveal continuity of the city. Such analysis can be defined as reading urban layers, or typological-morphological analysis including social dimensions that create layers. In this context, urban typo-morphological approaches and on conservation development plans is handled. Existing legal framework and Technical Specifications of Conservation Development Plan is evaluated and, conservation development plans prepared through these specifications is criticized as their insufficiency for multi-layered historical cities. An analytical method is presented to read urban texture diachronically and synchronically as an attempt to improve integrated conservation methods. Especially, reading method of Caniggia and Petruccioli, representators of Italian Morphology School provides knowledge to constitute the method. Some parameters are formed in an attempt to understand formation process of multi-layered historical cities.Doctoral Thesis Rural-ecological commons: Case of pastures in Izmir(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2018-06) Hazar, Dalya; Velibeyoğlu, KorayThe main research interest of this study is to determine the conflicts on the pastures, which are defined as the rural-ecological commons that are important for biodiversity and ecological sustainability. The study focuses on the transformative impacts of enclosure and commodification processes on the pastures. Pastures are crucial entities especially within the four dimensions, rich biodiversity of flora and fauna, rural development, erosion prevention, and rural traditions. Case study areas are located at three districts of İzmir are examined within the context of the conflicts on the pastures in relation with the recent legal regulations, determination, delimitation and allocation processes, malpractices, climate change and the civil responses. The data gathered from the snowball interviews, in-depth interviews with professionals and village headmen, personal observations, commission reports and media analysis are evaluated by the content analysis to determine the main conflicts to generate the pasture dimensions for the eDPSIR causal network model. DPSIR is a facilitative organization tool, which aims to understand the cause and effect relationships in the environmental and social issues to eliminate the socio-environmental conflicts and to simplify the data transmission for better communication with the decision-makers, which also has a potential to be used during the EIA and SIA report processes. In this study, a pasture dimension set within an eDPSIR causal analysis model is constituted for re-positioning and re-evaluating pastures in the planning and design literatures, and the verification of the data enhanced by the methodological triangulation. The exploratory case study method is the research design strategy of the study. Outcomes of the study reveals the main land use conflicts on the pastures and the triggering drivers, pressures, states, impacts and the recommended responses. The study confirms that the ecological-sensitive planning can be a crucial tool in terms of protecting and improving the pastures.Master Thesis Spontaneously-developed inner city technology precincts: Case of Izmir(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2010) Vuruşkan, Gülnur; Velibeyoğlu, KorayAt the end of 1990s, knowledge became the fourth factor of production beside: land, labor and capital. Knowledge sector as education, R&D, mass media, information technologies, and information services had a rapid entrance to our lives. Changing urban and economic trends effected evolution process of technological-development areas. Today, knowledge-intensive business and service sectors are accepted as the key players in knowledge-based development of cities. Suburban technologicaldevelopment areas have slipped to dynamic and vibrant urban centers where the business and service sector actually performs, and historical, cultural or creative character ascends. New urban technology precincts aim to sustain the process of knowledge production, transfer and dissemination by gathering different networks in strategic levels. Some urban technology precincts have emerged spontaneously in certain parts of cities named as spontaneously-developed urban technology precincts. Those areas act as a living organism because of their self study formation. Therefore, it is difficult to understand their general spatial and organizational characteristics The aim of the research is to clarify how spontaneously-developed technology precincts can be characterized. In this context, Çankaya-İzmir/Turkey was selected as case area. The area, was assessed within a system of indicators as governance, connectivity, clustering environment, talent and social environment, built environment, cultural and natural environment. As a result, case area in Çankaya . İzmir / Turkey can be accepted as an emerging inner city technology precinct waiting for local authorities to develop. It can be managed as a powerful source of local economic development and supply cultural and social prestige of İzmir.Master Thesis Understanding user experience of nature in urban green spaces through biophilic design: The case of Karşıyaka(01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2023-07) Üstündağ, Büşra; Velibeyoğlu, KorayIncreasing urbanization is reducing human interaction with the natural environment, creating negative consequences for both humans and nature. Since the majority of the human population lives in cities today, the nature experience mostly includes the urban nature experience. In this context, urban green spaces are among the main areas that allow people to interact with nature in their daily lives. Therefore, it is important to adopt design approaches that encourage people's nature experiences in the design of these areas. Biophilic design, which focuses on enhancing people's interactions with nature in the built environment, offers an opportunity in this context. This study focuses on understanding the user's experience of nature through biophilic design in the context of three neighborhood parks located in the Bostanlı neighborhood of Karşıyaka district of İzmir province. In this study, nature experience is considered at two levels: the environmental level and the individual level. The spatial characteristics and nature experience potentials of three selected neighborhood parks were examined at the environmental level. To explore the individual level of nature experience, a nature experience workshop was conducted with seven participants residing in the Bostanlı neighborhood. For both levels, the experience-based framework of biophilic design was used as a theoretical framework. As a result of the analyses, it has been understood that the user's experience of nature in the use of urban green spaces in densely urbanized areas is affected by spatial characteristics as well as individual factors. Furthermore, the study findings indicate that the experience-based framework of biophilic design provides a useful framework for comprehending how users interact with nature in urban green spaces.Master Thesis Urban design toolkit for creative place-making and cultural tourism: The case of Alaçatı(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2013) İnce, İrem; Velibeyoğlu, KorayThis study investigates relationship between creativity and cultural tourism in the case of Alaçatı. In this context, creative clustering process of Alaçatı known as small scale town presents new insights about sustainable cultural tourism. The urban design toolkit consisting diagnostic and predictive analyses is used for understanding and promoting creative environment of Alaçatı. Study findings suggest that creative clustering process especially in small scale towns promotes the sustainable development of cultural tourism. Ultimately, based on the findings of the study, creative clustering process minimizes negative impacts of the tourism development.Master Thesis Urban tomography and digital humanities in visual tradition of urban design(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2018-12) Yılmaz, Almira; Velibeyoğlu, KoraySince the 1960s, the information obtaining methods used in urban design studies in the visual-perceptual dimension have been improved and renewed with the developing technology and internet facilities in the world of the 2000s, however the urban design techniques have lagged behind this. In the studies carried out until the 1990s, only hand drawings, observations, one-to-one interviews and questionnaires were used as a data gathering method, technology and digitalism were not used. Where technology is not used in urban studies, traditional methods requires large data processing as time and effort in large-scale areas therefore data gathering methods has to change. In this study, the theoretical aspects of the methods used in the visual-perceptual tradition are discussed with the examination of especially the works of Kevin Lynch, Donald Appleyard and Gordon Cullen, who use traditional methods. Since social media and digital multimedia tools are frequently used in today's societies, every movement related to the city is available in a digital environment. It is explained that with ‘Digital Humanities’ a digital library approach that has been used in today's technology; we can have a more practical, more up-to-date and developing information network. Taking into consideration the active use of social media in today's world, considering the major trends such as big data analysis, internet of things, visualization tools -photographs, video records- and social media platforms, we can discuss the urban design of the city and its places and we will be able to obtain information about the city from millions of different perspectives. In this study, what urban designer can use the information technology and visualization methods in the accelerating new technological age and what are these methods theoretically adds to the field questions are discussed.
